HEMORRHOID SURGERY

WHAT IS HEMORRHOID SURGERY?

Hemorrhoid surgery, also known as hemorrhoidectomy or hemorrhoidopexy, is a medical procedure to remove or shrink painful, swollen hemorrhoids that do not respond to non-surgical treatments. It is typically recommended for severe cases of internal or external hemorrhoids that cause bleeding, discomfort, or prolapse (protruding from the anus).

Benefits

Unlike creams, medications, or home remedies that offer only temporary relief, hemorrhoid surgery completely removes or shrinks problematic hemorrhoids, preventing them from coming back.

Severe hemorrhoids can cause intense pain, itching, and irritation, especially when sitting or during bowel movements. Surgery removes the source of discomfort, allowing you to go about daily life without constant pain.

Chronic hemorrhoid bleeding can lead to anemia and increase the risk of infection. Surgery stops excessive bleeding and reduces complications associated with prolonged irritation.

Large or prolapsed hemorrhoids can make it difficult to pass stool, leading to constipation and straining. Surgery helps restore normal bowel function, making it easier and less painful to go to the bathroom.

Many hemorrhoid surgeries, like rubber band ligation or stapled hemorrhoidopexy, are minimally invasive and can be done as an outpatient procedure—meaning you go home the same day. Even traditional hemorrhoidectomy offers long-lasting results with a short recovery time.

SYMPTOMS

Bright red blood on toilet paper, in the toilet bowl, or on stool is one of the most common signs of hemorrhoids. The bleeding is usually painless but should not be ignored.

External hemorrhoids, especially if thrombosed (clotted), can cause sharp pain when sitting, walking, or having a bowel movement.

Hemorrhoids can cause persistent itching, burning, or irritation around the anus, making it uncomfortable to sit for long periods.

External hemorrhoids may feel like small, tender lumps near the anal opening, which can become inflamed or painful.

Internal hemorrhoids can make you feel like you haven’t fully emptied your bowels, leading to repeated straining.

A clear or yellowish discharge may occur after a bowel movement, often accompanied by irritation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectum or anus that can cause pain, itching, bleeding, and discomfort. They are common and can be either internal (inside the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus).

Hemorrhoids develop due to increased pressure on the veins in the rectal area. Common causes include chronic constipation, straining during bowel movements, pregnancy, prolonged sitting, and a low-fiber diet.

Common symptoms include rectal bleeding, itching, pain, swelling, and lumps near the anus. Internal hemorrhoids may not cause pain but can lead to bleeding, while external hemorrhoids may be more painful and irritated.

A doctor can diagnose hemorrhoids through a physical exam, digital rectal exam, or anoscopy. In some cases, a colonoscopy may be recommended to rule out other conditions if rectal bleeding is present.

Mild hemorrhoids may go away with home treatments, lifestyle changes, and over-the-counter medications. However, severe or persistent hemorrhoids may require medical intervention or surgery.

Weight loss procedures influence hormones like ghrelin (hunger hormone), leading to reduced appetite and improved metabolism, which helps with sustained weight loss.
