Hernia Surgery Q & A

What is a hernia?

A hernia develops when weakness in your muscular walls or connective tissue allows your internal organs or fatty tissue to push through and create a bulge. Depending on the location of your hernia, you may not notice symptoms right away.

Hernias are caused by a combination of tissue weakness and pressure. Your tissue weakness may be present at birth, or it could develop as you age. Factors like obesity, poor nutrition, and smoking contribute to your risk of developing a hernia. Similarly, if you suffer from chronic coughing or constipation, the extra pressure could exacerbate a weakness and cause a hernia to form.

If you have a hernia, you may experience:

  • A bulge that you can see or feel in your abdomen
  • An ache or burning sensation near the swelling
  • Pain when you bend or lift
  • Pressure or weakness in your abdomen or groin

If you notice these symptoms, schedule a consultation for diagnosis and treatment.

What is hernia surgery?

Hernia surgery repairs the weakness in your muscles or connective tissue that allows a hernia to form. At New Life Medical & Aesthetics, Dr. Naik and his team use minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgical procedures to repair a variety of hernias, including:

  • Inguinal (in your groin)
  • Umbilical (near your belly button)
  • Ventral (in the abdominal midline above the belly button)
  • Incisional (at old surgical sites)

Surgery repairs weakness in your muscle walls or connective tissue so your internal organs can’t bulge through to cause pain and other complications.

What should I expect during hernia surgery?

At New Life Medical & Aesthetics, Dr. Naik performs minimally invasive laparoscopic hernia surgeries. While you’re sedated, he makes a few small incisions in your abdomen and inserts surgical instruments, including a laparoscope.

The laparoscope is a thin tube with a camera on its tip that sends images to a monitor in the operating room. Dr. Naik can see the inside of your body to complete your surgical hernia repair without having to make a large incision in your body.  Not all hernias are the same and some are better addressed Open versus with a Scope.

Whether open or with a scope, Dr. Naik will close the hernia defect with sutures and if appropriate, reinforce it with a prosthetic material to reduce the chance of recurrence

In many cases, you can go home on the same day as your operation. Dr. Naik encourages you to get up and walk around soon after the sedation wears off. He gives you personalized aftercare instructions, including advice on when you can get back to work and resume your regular activities.

Dr. Naik has performed thousands of successful hernia surgeries.

Every surgery or procedure poses a potential risk to your health, life, and well-being. Dr. Naik does everything he can to reduce the risks associated with your procedure. He also explains all the benefits and risks of your treatment and will answer your questions thoroughly to help you make the best decision about medical and surgical treatments for your health and wellness.
